2 teenagers die in crash after leading police chase in stolen car

HOUSTON – Two teenagers died in a crash late Wednesday after leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen truck.

According to police, two armed men carjacked that truck's owner Wednesday evening on Beechnut Street near South Kirkwood Road.

Investigators said those two carjackers then drove off. Around 10:50 p.m., a Houston police officer, who was patrolling the area near Beechnut Street and Wilcrest Drive, saw that the driver hadn't turned on the truck's headlights.

The officer tried to pull over the truck to alert the driver, but police said the teenager behind the wheel began speeding away from the officer.

He led police on a chase for about one mile. According to police, after crossing the intersection of Beechnut Street and Eldridge Parkway, the driver lost control.

The truck slid sideways off the right side of the roadway and then smashed into a large brick sign in front of an apartment complex. Both the driver and his passenger died at the scene.

Inside the stolen truck, investigators said officers recovered a shotgun as well as a pistol.

The names of the teenagers who were killed in the wreck hadn't been released as of 6 a.m. Thursday.
