Man facing charges after shooting sister while playing video games

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A 21-year-old man has been charged with reckless injury to a child after firing a handgun inside a home in northwest Harris County on Sept. 16.

Around 2:45 p.m. on that day, police said Kevin Castillo was playing a video game in his room when he pointed a handgun, which he claims he thought was unloaded, at the TV and pulled the trigger. The bullet went through the TV and an adjoining wall, then struck his 13-year-old sister who was sitting on a bed.

Family members rushed to the girl's aid, holding paper towels to the wound behind her right ear.

The girl was taken to the hospital in good condition.

Castillo told police he pulled the magazine from the gun, but failed to remove the round chambered in the barrel.

He was released after posting a $30,000 bond. He is due in court in December.
