HOUSTON – Houston police are investigating after a man died in police custody, according to authorities.
Police responded April 15 to a welfare check at a CVS Pharmacy in the 4400 block of West Fuqua Street.
Roderick Ronall Taylor, 42, was at the scene being treated by Houston Fire Department paramedics, according to the report.
After being released by paramedics, Taylor became incoherent and uncooperative, walked into the store and asked to call police, authorities said.
An officer followed him into the store, where Taylor jumped over the counter of the pharmacy department, police said.
When the officer attempted to stop him, Taylor jumped back across the counter and attempted to get past the officer, reports said.
A fight erupted, and police said Taylor attempted to reach for the officer's duty belt.
A second officer arrived, but Taylor continued to fight both officers, police said.
The first officer deployed his stun gun.
Taylor continued fighting with the officers while he was handcuffed.
HFD was called back to the scene to treat Taylor for a second time. Taylor became unresponsive and was taken to a hospital, according to police.
Taylor was placed on life support and was in critical condition. He died Tuesday.
One of the officers was treated for a cut to his eye and abrasions on his arm, according to reports.
As is customary when someone dies in the presence of an HPD officer, the incident is considered an in-custody death and is being investigated by the HPD homicide and internal affairs divisions.
