HOUSTON - A man was arrested after a standoff with deputies in north Harris County.

Karriem Coates, 29, was charged with retaliation felony and assault on a family member.  Deputies said he barricaded himself inside an apartment with a baby.

Deputies were called out to a family disturbance in the 16700 block of Kuykendahl Road at the Emerald Cove Apartments Monday night.  A woman told deputies Coates had struck her several times.  Fearing for her and her children's safety, the woman fled the apartment with her 4-year-old child.  She was not able to leave with her 10-month-old baby.

Coates threatened to shoot the deputies if they tried to go into the apartment, investigators said.

Deputies requested the assistance of the Harris County Sheriff's High Risk Operations Unit (HROU).   After several hours of unsuccessful negotiating, HROU officers entered the apartment through a patio door.  They shocked Coates with a Taser and arrested him.  The baby was not harmed.

Coates is being held at the Harris County Jail.
