Man accused of sexually assaulting 13-year-old appears in court

Prosecutors: Man, girl met on Facebook

KATY, Texas – The 19-year-old accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old Katy ISD student went before a judge Thursday.

Kevin Enrique Mejia is charged with with aggravated sexual assault of a child.

He was the suspect of an Amber Alert issued on Tuesday by the Katy ISD police department on a 13-year-old minor who went missing from her school bus stop.

The teen disappeared Monday while walking to the stop on Fry near Younglake.

She was found safe Tuesday afternoon at an undisclosed apartment complex. Three men found with the girl were taken into custody for questioning.

Sheriff's officials said one of the men found with the girl was already under investigation for a prior incident involving the same teen. Sheriff's officials told Channel 2 Investigates the 13-year-old disappeared with the 20-year-old man in June.

Police said the girl met Mejia on Facebook.

Sheriff's officials said Mejia took the girl home during the June incident and they were investigating whether an "inappropriate relationship" happened during that time.

The parents of the teen told Katy ISD police their daughter had actually been kidnapped in June. However, sheriff's officials said the family never told them the June disappearance involved a kidnapping.

Sheriff's officials said after the girl was found Tuesday, she was taken to Texas Children's Hospital to undergo a sexual assault examination.

Sheriff's officials said they still don't know whether the teen left with the man willingly or by force. Sheriff's officials said they were still trying to figure out whether the other two men at the apartment had any involvement in the teen's disappearance.

While KPRC named the teen when the Amber Alert was issued, we are longer using her name because of the possibility the investigation into her disappearance may involve sexual assault.

Mejia was being held in jail on $35,000 bond.
