Man accused of killing elderly woman makes first court appearance

The man accused of killing a Hedwig Village woman appeared in court for the first time on Thursday.

Michael Susberry is charged with capital murder in the death of Janeil Bernard, 79. Susberry is the son of Bernard's former housekeeper, who she had been helping financially even after she stopped working for her.

In court, prosecutors went over the probably cause, saying Suberry admitted to the killing. Prosecutors said before Bernard was beaten, stabbed and robbed, she let Susberry in and offered him a drink of water.

Susberry used a walker to make his way to the bench, responding only to yes or no questions from the judge.

Prosecutors said on July 3 in Hedwig Village, Janeil Bernard's current housekeeper discovered the 79-year-old's body.

"We're at the beginning of the process. I mean, obviously, we want to take our time with the investigation. We want to continue to collect evidence because we want to make sure that we do seek justice and provide closure for this family," prosecutor Samantha Knecht said.

Susberry's attorney Robert Scardino said he will review the confession prosecutors claim he gave.

"I haven't seen what is alleged to be a confession nor have I had a chance to see the circumstances under which the the confession was taken so those are all the things that a lawyer does for his client in trial preparation," Scardino said.

Prosecutors said when police interviewed Susberry's family, his brother said Bernard was like a second mother to him.
