Mailman rescues children from burning home

HOUSTON - A mailman rescued two children from a burning home in southwest Houston on Tuesday.

The mailman was making his rounds in the 2800 block of Tidewater near Rocky Springs about 8:50 a.m. when he saw smoke coming out of a window.

"I just thought that I was doing my job," mailman Danny Thompson said. "I wanted to make sure everyone was safe out here."

The mailman went to the front door of the home to check to see what was happening.

"I went to the door the first time and knocked on the door," Thompson said.

Someone inside said everything was OK, but Thompson was worried.

"Then I saw a lot more smoke," he said.

Thompson then got the two children, ages 12 and 13, out. He also made sure no one else was inside the home.

Houston firefighters said they had a tough time battling the flames because there were burglar bars on the home.

Firefighters had to take breaks because they were battling hot temperatures, too.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The home was destroyed.
