Lone Star College is open ears when it comes to transgender bathroom decision

HOUSTON – It's a potential change not in the classroom or the curriculum -- but policy that will impact the restrooms on the 15 facilities of Lone Star College.

The school system is considering a proposal that would allow individuals to use the restroom that corresponds with their gender identity.

In a statement to Channel 2, a Lone Star spokesman told us in part "Lone Star College is proposing a revision to ensure an environment that gives students the opportunity to express themselves and live authentically."

On the Greenspoint campus, students we spoke to said they would not support the proposal.

"At the end of the day you're not a woman, you're not a man," says student Dimetriotis Tillman. "Top and bottom line, that's my personal opinion. Everybody's entitled to their own opinions."

The issue could revive memories of the highly contentious fight over Houston's Proposition 1, a measure to allow members of the transgender community to use the restroom of their choice that failed last November.

People are expressing their opinions on social media on the Lone Star proposal -- including Taylor Tappmeyer who writes on Facebook -- "I'm all for it. Trans people have been using the bathrooms of their choice for years and no one said anything. Go into the bathroom, use the bathroom and get out. Who are you to question someone’s gender or tell them where they can and can't go to the bathroom?"

The college will hear public opinion on the issue through Wednesday, Sept. 14. No word is out yet on when a decision would be made on the matter.
