DWI Trackers out in Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas – For the next several days, volunteers with DWI Tracker will be out on Montgomery County roads looking for drunk drivers.

If the volunteers see any, they notify the police and they even have cameras inside their cars that allows them to record evidence that's often used in court.

The organization is the brainchild of Smitty and Margaret Smith. Their daughter Meghann died three years ago when a drunk driver hit her. She was changing a flat tire on the side of the road.

"The vehicle veered off the road and hit and threw her about 170 feet," said Margaret Smith. "It doesn't get any easier. The pain gets worse and the tears continue to flow everyday."

Montgomery County roads have been a dangerous place this past week. Two separate DWI crashes have left five people dead and Margaret refuses to let another innocent victim die.

"It's hard to believe.  You never think you're going to get that knock on the door," she said.

Warren Diepraam with the Montgomery County District's Attorney office told Local 2 they're cracking down, too. They've created two task forces with other law enforcement agencies in the area.

"We formed two task forces. We're going to be looking at bars and looking at cars," said Diepraam. "Any establishments that are over serving can lose their license or have their license suspended."

Deputies will also be out enforcing the no refusal law through the Fourth of July holiday week.

"We don't want another family to ever go through what we live everyday," Smith said.
