MONTGOMERY COUNTY - An abused puppy brought to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter is recovering from complex surgery.

Carol DeWitt volunteers at the shelter and agreed to be a foster mother to the Chihuahua Pomeranian mix puppy named Kayla.  DeWitt said two men found the puppy in New Caney and brought it to the shelter.

"She could not use her back legs," DeWitt said.

The legs were broken in seven places. DeWitt said a veterinarian examined Kayla and said the injuries seem to show that the puppy had been abused, possibly dropped from a balcony or window.

"It was a horrific injury and the surgery was going to be very complicated," DeWitt said.

She said the shelter posted messages on their Facebook page asking pet lovers to donate money to help fund Kayla's medical bills. The shelter received more than $3,000 in donations for the surgery.

DeWitt said an orthopedic surgeon had to re-break Kayla's back legs and place pins in them. After the surgery, Kayla developed infections but with more treatment she recovered. DeWitt said the puppy needs another surgery but is on the path to recovery.

Kayla is now walking on her back legs. DeWitt said Kayla will likely be ready for adoption in mid-July.

Kayla is one of many animals available for adoption at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter. According to adoption coordinator Cory Durand, the shelter has taken in more than 1,300 animals in June.

Many of those cats and dogs have been abused or have special needs. Durand said they try not to turn animals away.
