Surge in mosquitoes, West Nile virus reported this year

HOUSTON – Harris County Mosquito Control says this is the worst year on record for the deadly West Nile virus in our area.

Insect repellent is bought about as quickly as employees can stock the shelves because the mosquito problem is so bad in our area right now. Residents tell Local 2 they are being swarmed and bitten by mosquitoes.

The rain over the weekend didn't help with the situation at all, but it is not just the city of Houston.

Down in Galveston it is equally as bad or even worse. The manager of Home Depot told Local 2 their stores in that area can barely keep up with the demand.

In fact, Galveston County is warning residents about the mosquitoes in that area because this is the time of the year when receding tide leaves salt water mosquitoes to hatch and start swarming.

Don't expect the mosquito problem to go away soon, especially with rain in the forecast.

Residents can also call their respective county to request spraying in a specific area.
