HOUSTON – Police are reviewing video surveillance as they try to identify the two armed men responsible for killing a customer during a robbery at a Subway in southeast Houston.
Investigators said two armed teenagers stormed inside the restaurant right off 610 on Martin Luther King Boulevard around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday and demanded all the cash from the two employees working at the time.
Then, police said the suspects turned their weapons towards the one customer, later identified as 36-year-old Christopher McGrew, who was eating at the time.
According to witnesses, things quickly escalated when McGrew tried to fight back.
"He was in the store eating. They tried to rob him as well. There was a struggle and they killed him," said Det. Thomas Biggs with the Houston Police Department.
McGrew was a regular, according to officials. He rode his bike to the store nearly everyday and was well liked by the employees.
Meanwhile, police said the suspects left the scene and got away with less than $100.
Modest Eldridge said she eats at the Subway often and lives down the road.
"I think things are getting worse and terrible, it's getting bad," Eldridge said. "It makes me scared to come out of the house. I'm 75 years old this morning and it makes me scared to come out of the house."
The restaurant was closed Wednesday while police continue investigating. The business is scheduled to reopen on Thursday, but those who live in the area said it will take much longer to once again feel safe.
A young employee of the Subway told Local 2 that this was the second time robbers have hit his workplace.
So far, police have not been able to release a description of the suspected killers.
