Security guard arrested for assault

HOUSTON – A security guard, hired to patrol a northwest Harris County apartment complex, was arrested after police said he sprayed a tenant with pepper spray.

Michael Therrell was charged with assault.

"This security guard just violated the individual's rights," said Lt. Stan Jolly with the Precinct 4 Constable's Office. 

Michael Jordan is the victim who lives at the apartment complex.

Jordan said he was helping his neighbor with her car that had broken down when the security guard approached him in the parking lot. 

"The security guard pulled up and said, 'It's past curfew, you have to go in the house,'" Jordan said. 

The 40-year-old father said he ignored the security guard and thinks that made him mad.

"He reached to grab me, to put handcuffs on me. I stood back and said, 'Don't put your hands on me,' next thing I know, he reaches up and shoots me with pepper spray," Jordan explained. 

Other residents at the complex have complained about that same security guard and others. 

They say he is trying to enforce a curfew, which was put in place to curb crime, but that he's going about it the wrong way. 

"Nine o'clock is the time we're supposed to go in the house, you know, the curfew," said Jamal Steward, who used to live on the property. 

"He's got to know the people who are doing bad, and he's got to know the people who are doing good," said resident Chadonne Knight. 

Local 2 reached out to the Dallas based security company to get their reaction to the allegations and to see if Therrell is still on the job, but the calls were not returned.
