Several family members told investigators they witnessed the shooting and tried to get Zarate to the hospital but car trouble slowed them down.  Family members got Zarate into another car and took him to the emergency room at Tomball Regional Medical Center, where he died from his wounds.

Zarate left four children behind.

The suspect was only described as Hispanic and driving a green four-door car, possibly a Chevy Cavalier. He also had lots of tattoos.
