HCSO: Over 190 DWI arrests made during Fourth of July holiday weekend

HARRIS COUNTY – The combined efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies in Harris County resulted in the arrest of 192 individuals suspected of driving drunk during the holiday weekend. Additionally, the HCSO's Traffic Enforcement Division investigated three fatal car accidents during the same time period.

Shortly after midnight on July 4, deputies responded to a major car accident in the 10900 block of W. Compaq Center Drive. An unidentified male was operating a blue 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche traveling eastbound when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree. The vehicle rolled over and caught fire, killing the driver.

That same day at approximately 10 p.m., Omar Lopez was driving a 1995 Lincoln Town Car southbound in the 2200 block of Sheldon Road when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a utility pole. Lopez was ejected from the car and died at the scene.

Later that night, HCSO deputies were dispatched to another major car accident. This time in the 29000 block of FM 2920. During the investigation it was determined that an unidentified male was walking westbound in the roadway when he was hit by a blue 2002 Chevrolet Silverado traveling eastbound. The truck's driver, Adam Zepeda, was attempting to pass a vehicle when he fatally hit the pedestrian.

Toxicology results are pending in all three of these accidents.

Other agencies that took part in the traffic initiative to crack down on drunken drivers included the Baytown, Pasadena, La Porte, Jersey Village, Tomball, Galena Park, Bellaire, and Jacinto City police departments, and all eight Constable Precinct Offices.
