Driver dead after shooting, crash in Highlands

HCSO: Witnesses heard at least 3 shots before crash

HARRIS COUNTY - A man was found dead in a pickup truck in the Highlands area of east Harris County late Monday night.

Harris County deputies said neighbors along North Main and Fig Orchard Road heard three or four shots fired around 10:30 p.m., and seconds later there was a loud crash.

When deputies arrived on scene, they found a black Ford F-250 crashed into a wooded area with a dead man inside.

Harris County authorities identified the man as John Pigg.

The pickup hit a power pole and knocked out power to the area. North Main and Red Haven Highlands was shut down for almost six hours.

"The driver of the vehicle who we have not identified as of yet appeared to have been shot," said Sgt. Robert Spurgeon with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said Pigg was shot at least one time, according to deputies. There were also several bullet holes in the pickup.

"Witnesses heard approximately three or four shots gun shots, then heard a crash; went out and investigated and found a vehicle crashed in a ditch," Sgt. Spurgeon said.

After interviewing witnesses, deputies determined that there was a second vehicle spotted leaving the scene. It was a car, but deputies only have a vague description of the vehicle and said it was headed southbound on N. Main Street.

This case is being investigated by the Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit.
