Deputy opens fire on accused shoplifter in north Houston

HOUSTON – Two men have been charged after a shoplifting incident outside a north Houston RadioShack Saturday.

Christopher Quintana, 34, is charged with theft and Ryan C. Pogue, 25, is charged with evading arrest.

Officials said that at about 1 p.m. Saturday, an off-duty deputy saw a shoplifter run out of RadioShack with merchandise. The deputy tried to stop him, but the thief jumped into a gray Mustang through the driver's side window as a driver waited.

"As he was walking up towards the RadioShack door, the door flies open and the suspect with an arm full of merchandise comes running out," Houston Police Department spokesman Kese Smith said.

Authorities said the deputy stood in front of the vehicle and told the driver and thief to stop, but the driver attempted to flee.

Police said the deputy opened fire and shot Quintana, who was laying across the Pogie's lap. Pogue stopped and was taken into custody. Quintana was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition.

"The deputy, still giving verbal commands to stop, discharges his duty weapon more than once, striking the burglary suspect," Smith said.

Witness Janet Curry was about to grab a bite to eat when she spotted the police scene.

"I told my sister, 'Oh my God, yellow tape.' I know what that means," Curry said.

KPRC 2 is told the deputy is a 23-year-veteran of the Sheriff's Office and was not hurt.
