Authorities investigating fatal shooting at NW Harris County home

HOUSTON – Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting at a northwest Harris County home.

Detectives and Harris Co. Precinct 4 deputy constables are still trying to sort out exactly what happened at the residence in the 4000 block of Brooklawn.

At around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, neighbors were startled by gunfire in this usually quiet neighborhood.

"My brother heard the gunshot and he woke me up. He heard one and when I woke up I heard the other one," said neighbor Odays Cruz.

According to investigators, those shots were fired by Derrick Casson, who told them he awoke early Tuesday morning to confront two men who broke into his home.

"He confronted the intruders who began to flee from the house, discharged, they jumped through the second floor window," said Sgt. Robert Spurgeon with the Houston Police Department.

Casson told police he went outside but didn't see anything. And then went to work.

"For some unknown reason, he didn't call police and went to work. He returned around 1 p.m. and went to check his house; that's when he discovered the deceased black male in his back yard," Sgt. Spurgeon said.

Casson believes the dead man is his 19-year-old son who lived in the house off and on.

So far detectives have not positively identified the deceased man.
