Woman dies after falling off Galveston Ferry

Coast Guard finds her body

GALVESTON, Texas - The Coast Guard has recovered the body of a woman who fell off a Galveston Ferry.

Investigators said Tina-Hoa Nguyen, 45, went overboard around 9 p.m. Monday while the Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry was traveling from the Bolivar Peninsula to Galveston Island.

The Coast Guard used a small boat and a helicopter to locate Nguyen in the water. Her body was recovered about 1,500 feet west of where she fell.

Nguyen was taken to The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, where she was pronounced dead.

"On behalf of everyone involved, our heartfelt condolences go out to the lady's family and friends," said Petty Officer 2nd Class John Schroeder, a duty watch-stander at Sector Houston-Galveston.

Each ferry has 4-foot railings to act as barriers between passengers falling overboard or jumping.

"She may have been sitting on the rail,"" said Patrick White of the U.S. Coast Guard.

The exact cause of her death is under investigation.
