SURFSIDE BEACH – Beachgoers in Surfside Beach are being warned about stingrays in the water.

Asst. Chief Greg Bisso with Surfside Beach police said Tuesday that purple warning flags are up to indicate dangerous marine life.

Bisso told Local 2 that admission booth clerks are also advising beachgoers to be on the lookout for stingrays.

Officials encourage anyone stung by a stingray to go to the hospital for an X-ray. They said it's the only way to know for sure if the barb is not stuck inside the wound, which would need to be removed.
