Roland Rene Alegria, 18, is accused of burglarizing a car in Galveston.

GALVESTON, Texas - The Galveston Police Department said they arrested a burglar in the act Saturday.

Roland Rene Alergia, 18, is charged with burglary of a motor vehicle, evading arrest with previous conviction and failure to identify fugitive from justice. Those charges carry a combined bond of $40,000. He also had a warrant out for his arrest for a previous crime.

It happened around 6 a.m. on the 1500 block of Bowie Street.

Galveston patrol officer Jeffrey Banks saw a white 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe with a man in the driver's seat, according to officials.

Authorities say Banks noticed that the driver's side window was broken and saw glass on the ground.

Police say Banks attempted to arrest Alergia but he climbed out of the passenger side door and ran away.

Banks chased after Algeria while additional police and the K-9 unit responded to assist, according to authorities.

Police say Alegria gave a false name at first but his real identity was eventually discovered.

"Officer Banks' vigilance and commitment to keeping our neighborhoods safe is directly responsible for the removal of this career criminal from out streets," Galveston police chief Henry Porretto said.
