Former 'teacher of the year' was experiencing flu-like symptoms

PEARLAND, Texas - A funeral is planned for a Pearland ISD teacher, who died suddenly after being sent home with flu-like symptoms.

Tracie Burroughs passed away Tuesday at a hospital. She worked for the district for 9 years.

Burroughs was the 2013 Pearland High School teacher of the year.

Below is a statement Pearland ISD released to the media:

"Pearland ISD is deeply saddened by the death of one of our employees. Pearland High School Spanish teacher Tracie Burroughs passed away Tuesday, Feb. 11. Mrs. Burroughs worked for Pearland ISD for nine years and was the 2013 Pearland High School Teacher of the Year. Pearland ISD will continue to provide counselors throughout the week for students and staff. At this time, we do not have any other details or know the cause of death."

A funeral is planned for Monday, Feb. 17, at Harvest Time Church on 17770 Imperial Valley Road at 11 a.m.
