‘Smile like Gavin’: Family of murder victim seeks help in finding suspects

Houston Police released video Tuesday appearing to show a group of men attacking 24-year-old Gavin Melchor.

HOUSTON – The family of 24-year-old Gavin Melchor is asking the public to identify the suspects in connection to their loved one’s killing.

Father Chris Melchor, aunt Kimberly Melchor and sister Christa Melchor are sharing memories with Gavin.

On March 2, Houston Police said officers found Gavin’s body at the Valero parking lot.

Surveillance video released Tuesday appear to show Gavin in an argument with a group of three men. Moments later, a man in a white shirt appears to tackle Gavin to the floor.

Another man is seen throwing a kick at Gavin while bystanders watch.

“The video has brought back a lot of the pain I first felt when I first found out about this about a month ago,” said Chris. “It’s very heartbreaking. It brings me a lot of sorrow."

The family tells KPRC 2 Gavin had attended Rodeo Houston that night and was making a transaction at the ATM inside the Valero when the encounter happened.

“Nothing was recovered from him and clearly in the video, you could see him rummaging through his pockets, taking his keys and phone and whatever else he owned,” said Chris. “He even bought a little cowboy hat that was hanging here.”

Chris said he bought the cowboy hat to give to his mother or grandmother.

The family describes Gavin as a loving boy with a kind soul.

“I would just like to get justice for my brother,” said Christa.

KPRC 2 has learned Gavin was a warehouse distributor for Yumi Ice Cream, where he had worked for about two years.

Coworkers tells KPRC they suspected something was wrong when Gavin did not show up to work the following Monday after March 2.

“We want the community to know that these three individuals are still walking free amongst your community, and they’re out there and we need your help," said Kimberly.

The family members wore matching T-shirts in solidarity with a picture of Gavin in angel wings.

“These shirts also say Smile at Gavin, because anybody that knew Gavin knew that he was always smiling. He was always smiling. Big smiles," said Kimberly.
