Father of 5 dies after being shot in back of head during ‘possible robbery’ in SW Houston, HPD says

HOUSTON – An investigation is underway after a man was fatally shot while heading to work in southwest Houston Tuesday, the Houston Police Department said.

Police responded to a call from an Uber driver around 5:23 a.m. about a man who was found at the Windfield II apartments, located at 10110 Forum W Dr. Officers said they initially thought the man died from natural causes.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim, who was identified as Walter Torres, with a lunch bag next to him, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Police believe this may have been the result of a possible robbery. They don’t know what was stolen but said Torres’ pockets were sifted. The suspect, who was only described as a man, standing 5′3″ and weighing about 145 pounds, was wearing dark-colored clothing, a gray hoodie, a mask and black boots, detectives said.

Family members said Torres was a hardworking father of five.

“He was a nice father. He was a nice human being. He was helping my mom every month. He would send money to my mom,” the victim’s brother, Jose Torres, said.

Investigators said they will be reviewing surveillance video at the apartment complex.
