RECAP: Elected officials, candidates call out Spring Branch ISD Board of Trustees over upcoming election

Last week, via legal counsel, the Spring Branch ISD Board of Trustees, defendant in a federal lawsuit alleging Voting Rights Act violations, filed a response agreeing that they do not oppose postponing the duly-schedule May 7, 2022 Board of Trustees elections.

Some argue that moving the election to November subverts the will of the people in both the upcoming election and the past election by extending the terms of three Spring Branch ISD trustees.

Trustee Karen Peck stated that these elected officials and candidates are aware of a plaintiff asking the federal court to issue an injunction in moving the May trustee election to the fall.

Peck said addressed three main points: If the judge moves the election, no one will be disenfranchised or deprived of their right to vote, November elections actually has a better voter turnout and last, the timing of the election is not decided by the board of trustees but depends on the ruling of the federal judge in this case.
