Teen shoots stepfather to death during celebration at SW Houston restaurant, HPD says

HOUSTON – Police said a 16-year-old boy shot and killed his stepfather Wednesday night at a restaurant in southwest Houston. The teen has been charged with murder.

The shooting occurred after 6 p.m. at Shabu Zone located at 11200 Bellaire Blvd., according to HPD.

Police said the family was celebrating someone’s birthday at the restaurant when the stepson got up and went to the restroom. Investigators said the teen came back with a pistol in his hand and shot the stepfather once in the head. Police said the teen then ran out of the restaurant.

A security guard said he saw the teen running in the parking lot and initially thought he was trying to avoid paying the food ticket. A patrol officer detained the teen and then the call on the shooting dropped, investigators said. The teen was taken in for questioning and then transported to the HPD Juvenile Division.

According to investigators, the restaurant was at capacity during the shooting.

The victim was 48 years old, according to HPD Assistant Chief Ban Tien. The family said he’s been around for nearly 10 years.

The motive for the shooting is unknown at this time.
