Everything you need to know about George Floyd’s private funeral Tuesday

HOUSTON – It will be a solemn day Tuesday as the world prepares to say their final goodbye to George Floyd in Houston. The Fort Bend Memorial Planning Center is organizing the funeral services for Houston-native George Floyd.

A public visitation for Floyd was held Monday at the Fountain of Praise Church and the funeral will be held there Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Floyd was killed in Minneapolis after a white police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes. His death sparked protests against police brutality across the country.

Floyd, 46, grew up in the Third Ward and graduated from Jack Yates High School where he played football.

Previously, memorial services were held for Floyd in Minneapolis and in Raeford, North Carolina

What time is the funeral service?

The funeral service is scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9.

Where is the funeral service?

The private funeral service will be held at The Fountain of Praise church at 13950 Hillcroft Ave in Houston.

Who will attend the funeral service?

Only family and invited guests are permitted to attend the private funeral service Tuesday.

Mayor Sylvester Turner, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Rev. Al Sharpton, Attorney Benjamin Crump, Slim Thug, Leela James, Paul Wall, Floyd Mayweather, Congressman Al Green, Bishop James Dixon, are among the guests attending the service.

What social distancing measures will be in place?

All guests must wear a mask and gloves to attend the funeral service.

How can I watch the funeral service?

The private service will be streamed live on www.tfop.org. KPRC 2 will provide a special live stream of his funeral services beginning at 11 a.m.

Where will George Floyd be buried?

George Floyd will be buried in Pearland on Tuesday, June 9 at the Houston Memorial Gardens located at 2426 Cullen Blvd, Pearland, TX 77581.

How can I attend the procession?

The public is invited to pay their respects to Floyd along the procession route where the casket will pass along from the church to the cemetery.

“Barricades are being placed along the procession route on Cullen where the horse-drawn carriage will travel to prevent vehicular access and pedestrian access to the roadway,” the city of Pearland wrote in a press release Monday. “These barricades will help keep visitors safe and help maintain traffic safety. Attendees are requested to stay behind the barricades to provide a safe travel location for the procession and to ensure safety of Mr. Floyd’s family.”

How to prepare to be a part of the procession?

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, people lining up along the procession route are encouraged to wear masks, maintain hygiene and socially distance if possible.

Also, heat will be an issue and officials urge people to take that into account.

“Current weather forecasts show ‘feels like’ temperatures reaching 107 degrees and the UV Index is extreme on Tuesday,” Pearland city officials wrote. “Visitors should consider the heat and when may be the best time for them to arrive to the area. Visitors are encouraged to wear light clothing, wear sunscreen, drink plenty of fluids and attend to restroom needs prior to coming to the location as public restrooms are very limited.”

Can the public attend the burial?

The City of Pearland anticipates the burial will remain a private event for family and invited guests only.

Will George Floyd’s burial in Pearland impact traffic?

The transport route from Houston to Pearland is not confirmed but is expected to exit from Beltway 8 to the Cullen Boulevard exit and proceed south on Cullen to the cemetery, according to the City Of Pearland.

Cullen Boulevard in front of Houston Memorial Gardens will be closed to vehicular traffic during the burial, but pedestrian traffic will be permitted in the area along Cullen Boulevard on the public sidewalks for those wishing to pay their respects, according to the City of Pearland.

Parts of McHard, Hawk and Hughes Ranch roads will also be closed to traffic.
