Local high school coach receiving support while fighting kidney failure

TOMBALL, Texas – Having his appendix removed on Thursday was just the latest medical fight Houston's Tywain Myles has found myself in.

The grade-school coach and former professional football player was forced to check in to the Tomball Regional Medical Center early Tuesday morning because of an infection connected to his recent kidney failure.

"We found out almost a year ago that he was in stage 4 kidney failure," his wife, Laura, said. "Just all of a sudden it was just out of the blue. So we started doing treatment for that stuff right away."

At 6 feet 3 inches tall and nearly 300 pounds, Myles was a defensive tackle at Tarleton State University. He signed as a practice squad free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars and later signed with the Atlanta Falcons. He's fought his kidney ailment the same way he battled for years on the football field.

"He doesn't take 'no' for an answer and he fights, and he doesn't let people know how bad it really is," Laura said. "Most people he works with don't even know he needs one (a kidney)."

After moving to Houston with his wife, whom he met in college, Myles became a teacher and coach at Fonville Middle School and was planning to coach at the high school level this year.

There are young people, both on and off the field, who are pulling for his recovery.

"He has a large fan base. Of course, his kids are right here for him, and every night we have to explain to them what's going on, which is really hard," Laura said, while fighting back tears. "He's got a lot of kids on the football field that are waiting for him to come back."

Myles and his wife have three sons.

The 33-year-old currently is in stage 5 kidney failure and in need of a transplant.
