League City water leak repaired, restrictions still in effect

LEAGUE CITY, Texas - A major water leak prompted League City to issue water restrictions.

City officials said the transmission line that carries 90 percent of League City's surface water supply has a severe leak near the intersection of Calder and Link roads.

Repair crews found a 12-inch-by-12-inch hole in the water pipe. A new pipe was installed and welded on Friday, but crews still needed to flush and bleed air from the line and apply a required treatment.

The city enacted stage 3 of its drought contingency plan, which has the most restrictions. City officials said the restrictions would remain in effect while testing is done and they will reevaluate rescinding it soon.

Officials said the following orders are in effect for residents and businesses:

  • Irrigation of landscaped areas is prohibited.
  • Use of water to wash any motor vehicle, motorcycle, 4-wheeler, boat, trailer, airplane or other vehicle is prohibited.
  • Use of water to wash down any sidewalk, walkway, driveway, parking lot, tennis court, or other hard surface area is prohibited.
  • Flushing of gutters or permitting water to run or accumulate in any gutter or street is prohibited.
  • Washing down any building or structure for purposes other than immediate fire protection is prohibited.
  • Use of water to fill, refill or add to any indoor or outdoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi-type pools or waterslides is prohibited.
  • Use of water in a fountain or pond for aesthetic or scenic purposes is prohibited, except when necessary to support aquatic life.
  • Use of water from hydrants for construction purposes or any other purpose other than fire fighting is also prohibited.

The plan also mandates that water customers repair controllable leaks within a reasonable period after having been given notice directing the repair of such leak

Anyone who violates the restrictions may be fined between $100 and $2,000.
