League City man charged with murdering his wife

Man approaches off-duty officer, says something wrong with his wife

LEAGUE CITY, Texas - A League City man is now facing charges after his wife was found dead in their home in the 800 block of Driftwood.

Investigators said an off-duty League City police officer who lives in the neighborhood first called police around 2 p.m. Saturday.

The officer's neighbor, 49-year-old Felipe Alberto Fernandez,  had came to his home with an ominous message.

"He was approached by a Hispanic male saying that there was something wrong with his wife, and we weren't sure what the circumstances were," said officer Reagan Pena, with the League City Police Department.

Patrol officers responded to the scene and at that is when they found Fernandez's wife, 33-year-old Katrina Gonzales, deceased.

Although the official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner, signs of blunt force trauma were observed.

Fernandez is charged with murder and bond is set at $150,000.

Neighbors told Local 2 the couple ran a day care out of the home and had two elementary-aged children.

"He was down to earth, a real nice guy," said neighbor John Dailey. "I would never expect this, never. He seemed really nice."

Others in the neighborhood expressed shock when learning about the woman's death. Steve Montgomery called it a tragedy.

"The kids play in the street, they play in the yards. It's just a good, very quiet neighborhood," said Montgomery. "So for something like this to happen, it's upsetting."
