HOUSTON – Houston Councilman Larry Green took his final ride through the District K, where he was elected to serve since 2012.
It was a large procession, led by the Houston Police Department, from Brentwood Baptist Church on Landmark Street to Houston Memorial Gardens in Pearland.
Dozens packed into the church to say their final goodbyes to Green.
The service started with a viewing from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. That was followed by an Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity omega service from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
Among those who spoke during the service were Green’s family, Mayor Sylvester Turner, Council Member Jerry Davis, Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis, U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, and U.S. Rep. Al Green, D-Texas.

Green had met with the late council member two days before his death.
“He was not a show horse, he was a work horse,” said the 9th Congressional District representative. “He really got things done and the people in the community were aware of what he was doing.”
Members of the community, many of whom were constituents of Green’s, shared their gratitude for the councilman’s service to his district, community and city.
“This was definitely a celebration of life he had so much spirit of excellence he believed in the community and we believed in him,” said Shawn Ru Shing, who lives in District K.
Green’s death left behind a large void and an opportunity to carry on his legacy. During the service, it was announced that a Larry Green Scholarship Fund would be created in his memory and that $15,000 has already been pledged.
Green was found dead Tuesday by police officers conducting a welfare check at his home.
A special election to fill Green’s District K seat will be held May 5.
