A Klein Collins High School student was airlifted to the hospital after falling from a balcony, officials say.
Around 12:40 p.m. Friday, officials at Klein Collins High School said a 9th-grade student walked out of class, climbed over a second story railing and fell to the floor below right in front of the main office. The principal said the freshman quickly had help.
"A student notified me that this female student needed assistance. Immediately went to that area and notified the nurse and she came to give assistance as well," Klein Collins principal Randy Kirk said.
Emergency workers also rushed to the scene to stabilize her before LifeFlight airlifted her to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. The district said one of her parents and other family members arrived just before takeoff.
District leaders said even after looking at surveillance video, they do not know why she went over the railing.
"There are surveillance cameras. I've watched the video. She walked directly from her classroom to the railing. And then climbed over the railing and fell," Judy Rimato, Klein ISD associate superintendent, said.
The district said counselors were at the school to help students and faculty. Students left school in disbelief.
"It spread around the school super fast. It took 20 minutes for everyone to know about it," student Mikaela Peterson said.
The student has since recovered from her injuries, according to the family.
Klein ISD released this statement on the incident: "Crisis counselors are at the campus to work with students and staff affected by today's tragedy. At this time, we do not know the condition of the student. More information will be released as available.The Klein ISD and Klein Collins administration are deeply saddened by today's incident."
