Hundreds gather to remember Texas State student from Humble

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Hundreds gathered at The Quad at Texas State University to remember Houston native Matt Ellis, who died following a fraternity party this week.

“I just want to say thanks to everyone who came out,” one of Matt’s friends and Phi Kappa Psi brothers said through tears. “This is a huge turnout.”

There was no talk of investigations, or suspensions. Only prayer, hugs and songs.

“I saw Matt every day since the beginning of August and these past few days have been tough,” a fraternity brother who described himself as Matt’s best friend said. “He may not be with us here, but I’m going to cart Matt with me till the end.”

Many of Matt’s fraternity brothers wore Astros gear in his honor, including Zachary.

“He enlightened my life, truly, and I hate not having him here anymore,” Zachary told KPRC, wearing an Astros shirt. “At the end of the day we lost a brother. That’s it, it's like the same exact thing as losing a brother.”

About 400 people attended the vigil, many of them strangers.
