HPD: Man fatally hits stepson, 3

Jorge Rodriguez-Escaramuza charged with injury to child

HOUSTON - A man has been accused of fatally hitting his 3-year-old stepson.

Jorge Rodriguez-Escaramuza, 24, has been charged with injury to a child.

Houston police said Jonathon Martinez died at Texas Children's Hospital on Nov. 4.

Investigators said Jonathon had been attacked in an apartment in the 6500 block of Mapleridge on Nov. 2.

Jonathan's mother called 911 on Nov. 4 because her son was not responsive, police said. She was adamant that she had not hurt her son, officials said.

An autopsy conducted on Nov. 5 determined that Jonathan died from blunt force trauma to the abdomen, investigators said. He had suffered a perforated intestine which likely leaked bile into his body, causing his death, detectives said. Doctors said injuries like that generally result in death 48 to 72 hours later.

Police said they spoke to Rodriguez-Escaramuza, who initially denied hurting Jonathan. He eventually said he was "play boxing" with Jonathan and hit him in the abdomen.

Investigators said the amount of force required to perforate Jonathan's intestine would not be consistent with "play boxing."
