HPD: Father gets into shootout with attacker, 2 die

Woman, infant son were in middle of shooting, police say

HOUSTON - A father died after he was shot by teenage attackers in front of his fiancé and infant son in northwest Houston.

Houston police said the family returned from dinner around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and were ambushed as they were about to get out of their SUV to go inside their Avery Park apartment on West Gulf Bank near TC Jester.

Police said three attackers walked up to the vehicle and opened the passenger-side door, where the mother was sitting holding her son. She told police she had just taken the baby out of the back car seat.

The shooters fired over the mother and child in order to hit the 23-year-old father, who was sitting in the driver's seat, police said.

Officers said the father fired back at the suspects. A 15-year-old and a 19-year-old were found shot in the parking lot, police said. Bullets even pierced nearby apartment walls and cars.

Dametrice Potts said he heard the gunfire and ran outside just in time to see several men running away.

"They had guns in they hands, so I moved out the way and that's when I (saw) the little guy laying on the ground," said Potts. "That's when I ran to him."

Potts said he dialed 911 and an operator told him how to perform CPR.

"I did revive him twice," Potts said.

Potts said he was not sure who he helped, but soon medics showed up to take over the emergency care.

Police said the father and 15-year-old died at hospitals. The 19-year-old was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition.

Investigators said the mother and her baby were not harmed. The mother told detectives she did not recognize the attackers or know why they targeted her son's father.

A description of the third attacker has not been released.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
