Houston woman marries herself in elaborate ceremony

HOUSTON – Weddings are usually a celebration of love between two people. However, a Houston woman is making headlines all over the world for marrying herself.

Yasmin Eleby is a kindergarten teacher in Saudi Arabia.

She had promised herself that if she wasn't married by her 40th birthday, she would marry herself. She did just that in an elaborate ceremony in Houston, where she lived before moving overseas.

"I made vows to myself," Eleby said. "I made promises to honor, love and forgive myself."

Eleby admits her wedding with herself was unorthodox.

"I didn't do it because I couldn't find a husband," she said. "I really want people to know that I'm not angry. I'm not lonely. I'm not bitter. I'm not a spinster. I'm just a fun-loving, happy person."

Eleby said she is still holding out hope for a husband, but until then vows to love and respect herself. She said her wedding is more of a dedication to herself. It wasn't a legally-binding union, instead she said it was spiritual and emotional.

"I'm looking around seeing people wiping their eyes," she said. "I'm trying to keep it in."

Eleby's wedding was complete with 10 bridesmaids, and many supportive friends and family. Her mother walked her down the aisle.

"It was very emotional," she said. "Very spirit-filled and very uplifting."

Eleby said she plans on traveling to Dubai, Cambodia and Laos, which will serve as her honeymoon.
