Houston Police Academy bomb scare launches internal investigation

HOUSTON – The Houston Police Department is launching an internal investigation after they say their own bomb squad caused a scare at the Police Academy in North Houston, Local 2 investigates reported Thursday.

HPD officials say after their bomb squad unit finished practice on Tuesday, they drove off with pipe bombs on the bumper of the truck.

One of those bombs fell off the truck and onto the street.

A passerby found it on the road, noticed the the HPD markings and took it back to the academy.

A cadet who was handed the bomb took it to a counselor who reported it.

All buildings were then evacuated, classes emptied, officers were sent home and the bomb was removed.

The bomb squad was called out and it was then they realized it was their own bomb.

Officers said no one was hurt. However, an internal review is now under way.
