HOUSTON - Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia is a special guest on this week's Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall.
Among the topics are his thoughts about running for Houston mayor.
"I have had success as a sheriff," he said. "When I took over the office we were $60 million over budget, had an overcrowded jail house and were shipping inmates and our tax money to Louisiana."
Garcia said because of those accomplishments, there is good reason for those wanting to urge him to run for mayor. Also from Garcia, the challenge of continuing to provide quality service to the residents of unincorporated Harris County, his support for pre-K education as a way to cut down on the population of his jails and his reaction to the state legislators talks about sanctuary cities.
ALSO THIS WEEK:
George V. Masi, the President and CEO of Harris Health System and Elvin Franklin Jr. Chairman of the Harris Health Board of Managers.
The topic is the $14 million deficit for the Harris Health system for the 2014-2015 fiscal year and the many more millions being paid by taxpayers to make up for the state's decision not to expand Medicaid.
"Seventy-thousand patients are now uninsured and Harris County taxpayers are absorbing $87 million every year for patients who could have been insured and we'd be realizing the revenue from that insurance," he said.
Long-term issues could be a lower certification for Ben Taub hospital, one of only two Level 1 Trauma Centers in Harris County.
Harris County District Clerk Chris Daniel who talks about the changes in the jury system through the years, including the diversity today compared to 60 years ago when the first woman was seated as a juror.
Also the incredible successful court challenge by a black Houston woman who fought for her freedom in the 1800s.
Houston Newsmakers airs Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. right after "Meet the Press" on KPRC Channel 2.
