Houston Newsmakers Mar. 6: Primary elections, councilmember Amanda Edwards, Anthony Graves

Graves speaks about life after 18 years behind bars

Super Tuesday was a must win day in Texas for Senator Ted Cruz. He was able to win Texas and two other states but what does it mean in the broader story as the GOP marches toward an eventual nominee. State Senator Paul Bettencourt, (R) Houston, is a guest on Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall and says the record Republican turnout can be traced to one person.

“You’re looking at turnout levels that are off the scale,” he said. ”In Harris County we had 320,000 people show up to vote in the Republican Party. The previous record was only a 171 thousand. It’s nearly double. That’s the Trump effect.“ Bettencourt weighs in on the challenge of all candidates going forward and the possible impact of former Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney as he launched a frontal verbal assault against the candidacy of Donald Trump.

HOUSTON FINANCIAL CHALLENGES

Houston Council Member Amanda Edwards (At Large Pos 4) joins Khambrel with thoughts about the financial challenges of the city of Houston and one of her main priorities in the months ahead. “I really want to focus on economic development opportunities,” she said. “Where do we have some existing opportunities to really leverage more economic generation for the city.”

WRONGLY CONVICTED: NOW GIVING BACK

Anthony Graves was convicted of killing a family of six and spent 18 years behind bars, 12 of them on death row before being released. That release came after his conviction was overturned and the prosecutor disbarred for using false testimony and hiding evidence that could have proved Graves innocence. Amazingly he holds no ill will toward anyone and is using the 6,640 days behind bars for good. “I liken it to going off to a boarding school and learning about our criminal justice system and now coming out being an expert on it and able to educate people about what is actually happening in it.” More on the clinic the Anthony Graves Foundation is opening for formerly incarcerated men, women and their families.
