Houston mayoral candidate Ben Hall airs ad for mayor

Hall says ad gives hint to how he'll campaign against Mayor Annise Parker

HOUSTON - In less than three months, voters will elect a new mayor of Houston. For now, they are getting a closeup look at one of the leading candidates.

He's well-funded, but perhaps not as well known. For Houston attorney and mayoral candidate Ben Hall, the launch of his TV ad represents his first big introduction to the majority of voters.

While building name identification, Hall said the ad also gives some hint to how he will campaign against two-term incumbent Mayor Annise Parker, and what he considers her poor handling of the city's finances.

"It really wasn't a shot across the bow as much, it's really putting a laser on the ship to say these are the issues we have to discuss and voters need to know about," said Hall.

But Rice University political professor Mark Jones believes very few voters are paying attention to city politics at this stage.

"Where it may have effect, media coverage for Hall, and sending signal to donors and potential donors that Ben Hall is serious about the race," said Jones.

Mayor Parker's campaign staff isn't commenting on Hall's ad, but they said the mayor is proud to run on her record.

"When the times really were tough, Annise Parker rolled up her sleeves and changed the way City of Houston does business, and now Hall wants to be mayor?" said Sue Davis.

Mayor Parker's campaign won't say when she'll begin her TV ads. Hall, meanwhile, says you can expect to see more very soon.
