Houston man faces arson charge after apartment fire

HOUSTON - Houston police have arrested a man on an arson charge in an apartment complex fire allegedly started by a thrown Molotov cocktail.

The fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, at the El Sol Real apartments in the 2300 block of Hayes near Westheimer

The Houston Fire Department says one firefighter suffered a minor hand injury in the blaze extinguished early Friday. Several units suffered heavy damage.

Calvin Silva was inside his apartment when his neighbor came knocking on his door to get him out.

"I come around and the window blows up. I was like, 'what?' I called 911 and after that he (neighbor) called my neighbors upstairs. They got the worst of it," Silva said.

Investigators say 26-year-old Darrius Owens allegedly was in a dispute with another family member at the apartments. Authorities are trying to determine the reason for the argument. The other man suffered only minor injuries.

City jail records show Owens was in custody Friday with no immediate details on bond or an attorney for him.

Five units caught on fire before crews were able to get the flames under control.

Red Cross officials were assisting the displaced residents.
