Houston Grand Opera opts for GRB convention center after Harvey flooding

HOUSTON - The Houston Grand Opera has a temporary home at the George R. Brown Convention Center after heavy rain from Hurricane Harvey swamped the original performance venue.

Opera officials on Monday announced the move from the flood-damaged Wortham Theater Center to Exhibit Hall A-3 of the convention center, which at one time hosted about 10,000 Harvey evacuees.

Harvey made landfall in South Texas on Aug. 25. Record rain flooded parts of Houston. Areas of the Wortham Theater Center were inundated with 12 feet (nearly 4 meters) of water.

Authorities last week announced the Wortham Theater Center would be closed for repairs until mid-May. The convention center will host at least three Houston Grand Opera performances through December.
