HOUSTON - The U.S. Postal Inspector is investigating after several residents’ mailboxes at the Sugar Hill Condominiums were tampered with Friday morning.
One resident said someone had clearly forced open some of the mailboxes.
“These two panels in the mailbox were open. I could see mail in them,” Alice Herd said.
The incident happened right before 10 a.m., when Herd said she saw the damaged mailboxes and didn’t know what to think.
“I hope nothing was stolen and I didn't suspect anything at the time but when you think about it, how else did they get open but vandalism?” Herd said.
The U.S. Postal Inspector said damaging mailboxes and stealing mail are federal crimes and could result in jail time.
Herd said what concerns her the most, is the good number people who live in the complex are seniors, who often receive checks and other important documents and packages in the mail.
“I think anybody that lives who thought mail had been stolen would be concerned. If somebody was expecting a check, I guess they would be alarmed,” she said.
Anyone who would like to report mail theft should call 1-877-876-2455.
