Houston area students begin receiving donated supplies from Backpack Boosters program

Campaign raised $263,838 in school supplies for new school year

HOUSTON – Local students began receiving school supplies donated through the Backpack Boosters program.

KPRC teamed up with Kroger, CBS Radio and vitaminwater to collect donations from July 27 through Aug. 9. Shoppers could visit any area Kroger store and donate a pre-packaged school supply kit for $7. They could also make a $1, $3 or $5 donation at the counter.

The campaign raised a total of $263,838 in school supplies for the new school year.

On Thursday, students from Sylvan Rodriguez Elementary in southwest Houston received some of the donated supplies.

Warehouse drivers for Kroger will also deliver supplies to other schools in the Houston Independent School District, as well as KIPP, Alief, Galena Park, Humble and Klein ISDs.

This year's Backpack Boosters driver will benefit 37,691 local students.
