HISD students perform Gangnam-style dance to get voters to polls

$1.9 billion referendum on November ballot

HOUSTON – HISD is working to get people to vote in November, and they're hoping to get folks to the polls with a parody of the Gangnam-style video by South Korean pop star Psy.

On Friday morning, students and faculty at Sam Houston Math and Science Technology Center gathered to do the popular dance in front of KPRC Local 2 cameras.

"They have good energy, but I've not seen it like this," said Jane Crumb, principal of Sam Houston High School. "I hope it continues all day.

HISD has a $1.9 billion referendum on this year's ballot. The district is hoping to rebuild or renovate 38 schools if the bond is approved by voters.

If passed, ground won't be broken until 2014, at the earliest.

"People need to know they have the right to vote and it's our duty to vote," Crumb said. "We really want to get the facilities our kids need, and when it's about our kids you'll do anything."

A music video has also been made, featuring students, teachers and even school board members doing the "Gangnam Style" dance.
