HOUSTON - The Houston Independent School District is keeping 20 magnet programs operating another year, but is also slashing their budgets.

The programs will receive half their funding for the 2014-15 school year, HISD said.

The budgets will be eliminated for the 2015-16 school year.

HISD established a process for schools that are interested in appealing the loss of their magnet program designation.

Principals were made aware of the process and had until Nov. 8 to decide whether to appeal the decision.

The campuses that appealed their loss of magnet status are Burbank Elementary, Elrod Elementary, Law Elementary, Pleasantville Elementary, Wesley Elementary, Attucks Middle, Holland Middle, Henry Middle, Jackson Middle, Madison High, Worthing High, Wheatley High and Westbury High schools.

Other schools on the list of losing their magnet budget are West University Elementary, Deady Middle, Dowling Middle, Key Middle, Jones High, Lee High and Sharpstown High schools.

HISD said magnet programs will be notified of the committee's decision on Nov. 18.
