HOUSTON – Officials with the Houston Independent School District are assessing the extensive flood damage at their facilities and now estimate between 10,000 to 12,000 students will need to be temporarily moved to new schools when classes resume.

Those figures were posted Saturday on the district's official Twitter account.

The district toured and posted posted images of Hilliard Elementary School Saturday, one of the many schools severely impacted and hit hard by Harvey-fueled floodwaters.

According to HISD, officials have visited 245 schools and believe 115 can be deep cleaned and ready for school on Sept. 11.

But the district added there is always a chance that date could change and the start of school could be delayed even further.

The district tweeted that they do not want to put any student in harm's way and are following strict guidelines for restoration.
