High Island ISD employee leaves gun in district vehicle, attorney says

HIGH ISLAND, Texas – High Island Independent School District officials are discussing "appropriate action" after a district employee left a firearm in a district vehicle, according to the school district's attorney.

The firearm was found while the baseball team was being transported, according to the school's interim principal.

The kindergarten through 12th grade school has 150 students and 13 teachers. The graduating class this year is 13.

The employee was authorized by state law and the Board of Trustees to have the gun on school property, but had unintentionally left it in the district vehicle. It was returned without problems.

District officials declined to comment. It is unclear whether parents were notified of the incident.

It is also unclear if the employee was placed on administrative leave.

The district's attorney sent a statement to KPRC saying it is taking appropriate action to ensure that this mistake doesn't happen again. The superintendent said there is an executive session-board meeting tonight.

One parent said he wishes he had known about the gun and is concerned about the safety of his child.

A recent graduate said he would be "nervous" if a younger student were to have found the gun. He also said he thinks the district should tell people about it.

Others said they think the district should have handled the situation better.
