HFD: rubberneckers back up in main lanes of Hardy Toll Road, cause wreck

HOUSTON – The Houston Fire Department said rubberneckers in a van caused an accident when they backed up in the main lanes of the Hardy Toll Road to watch a pickup truck fire.

According to reports, that truck caught fire around 5:15 a.m. Sunday, and the driver pulled over to the side of the road near Lazy Pines Street.

While HFD attempted to put out the fire, a work transport van carrying 6 to 8 workers backed up in the middle of the road.

Investigators said a car heading down the toll road could not avoid the van and slammed into the back of it.

Amazingly, the car's driver sustained only minor injuries and was transported to the hospital in stable condition.

HFD said the passengers in the van all took off after the accident, but the driver stayed and waited for police to arrive.
