HCTRA details process to remedy TxTag violation invoices

HOUSTON – The Harris County Toll Road Authority released details Friday of the process EZ Tag customers should take if they have received erroneous TxTag violation invoices.

Officials at HCTRA said in a statement that the agency recently learned about some non-HCTRA transactions, which should have posted to EZ Tag accounts, that were not completed. They said it resulted in TxTag violation invoices being sent to EZ Tag customers.

“Specifically, some EZ Tag customers with good accounts may have received TxTag invoices for tolls on the Grand Parkway for the month of May 2017,” officials said in a written statement.

Officials said EZ Tag customers who received TxTag invoices should email txtagdisputes@hctra.org with the following information:

  • Copy of invoice clearly showing the transaction details
  • Name
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • HCTRA EZ Tag account information
  • License plate

KPRC 2 was contacted by several people who use an EZ Tag and said they had been slapped with extra charges. Most of them said they were driving along the Grand Parkway on the north side of the Houston area.

The Grand Parkway is one roadway in the Houston area that uses the TxTag system instead of the EZ Tag system. However, the tags are supposed to work interchangeably.

When KPRC 2’s Keith Garvin first reported the issue Tuesday, officials with HCTRA, which administers EZ Tag, said they were aware of the issue and were investigating the cause.

On Friday, officials said the issue seemed to stem from the launch of a new regional hub to promote national interoperability of the HCTRA tags.
